What is UD?

Universal Design is an educational framework based on research in the learning sciences, including cognitive neuroscience, that guides the development of flexible learning environments that can accommodate individual learning differences. UD provides a framework so educators can reach as wide an audience as possible.

Syllabus

CSM does not have an official syllabus template; however here are some resources available to create a universally designed syllabus.

Captioning videos

When creating videos for class use, captioning may be one of the most useful tools provided to students. Captioning not only allows those who are deaf or hard of hearing to use the videos effectively but also provides a wide range of uses. If videos are captioned, students are able to watch the videos wherever they may be such as a loud coffee shop or a quiet library.
‚ÄčThe following is a list of open source tools that provide captioning software:

  1. Youtube - Youtube provides a free and easy to use captioning tool. A guide to use the tool is provided here. Captions can either be manually created or auto-generated, but it is highly recommended to go back and edit the auto captions. Youtube also allows captions to be exported. These exported caption files can then be imported into other video hosts such as Vimeo.
  2. Camtasia - Camtasia is a free video editing tool that includes a captioning tool that also has auto generating capabilities. This tool is great for those who are editing and caption their own videos. Keep in mind that videos should be no more than a maximum of 10 minutes but ideally less than 6 minutes. Tutorials for captioning are included below:
                Mac
                Windows
