Research like the meta-analysis by Wisniewski, Zierer, and Hattie (2020) (link access through Mines’ library credentials) suggests that feedback is one of the most important drivers of student learning, but feedback needs to be specific and timely in order for students to benefit. Canvas has a few tools that can help streamline the process of giving students feedback in a timely manner.

Strategies to Implement This Week

  1. Recommendation: Use Canvas rubrics to help your students understand the goals of an assignment and to give them feedback on their performance. For more information on how to develop a rubric, please see this handout (requires Mines Canvas login) from the Trefny Center.
  2. Recommendation: Use Speedgrader as another Canvas tool for quickly grading student work and providing feedback directly in the assignment.
