All current Mines students, undergraduate or graduate, may register for Program courses without applying to the licensure program. All students who plan to pursue licensure must apply to the Program at least one semester before taking EDFE 554 and SCED 541/MED 441.

All current Mines undergraduate students, graduate students, and individuals who hold a baccalaureate degree from Mines earned within ten years may apply for the program. A 2.75 GPA in the last 60 credit hours of coursework is necessary for admission. Students with a 2.0 - 2.75 cumulative GPA in previous 60 credit hours of coursework must earn a minimum 3.0 average GPA in their first three UNC PTEP courses for full admissions.

To apply:


  • Current Mines students must:
    • Enroll in EDFE 125,
    • Submit a Letter of Interest stating you are applying for the Mines Program. In a 500-750 word letter, discuss the following: 1) your reasons for exploring teaching; 2) experiences you have had with secondary-aged youth (coaching, tutoring, etc.).  Include in your letter your full name as well as either your date of birth or UNC Bear number, and
    • Submit unofficial transcripts that show a cumulative GPA.

  • Mines graduates who did not enroll in Program coursework prior to their Mines graduation, must:
    • Complete a UNC Graduate school online application and indicate the Teacher Licensure: Secondary - Sci/Math Tch Prep CSM,
    • Submit a Letter of Interest stating you are applying for the Mines Program. In a 500-750 word letter, discuss the following: 1) your reasons for exploring teaching; 2) experiences you have had with secondary-aged youth (coaching, tutoring, etc.).  Include in your letter your full name as well as either your date of birth or UNC Bear number.
    • Pay a $50 non-refundable application fee,
    • Send an official transcript from each college attended, and
    • Enroll in EDFE 125.

  • Mines graduates who enrolled in Program coursework prior to their Mines graduation, must:
    • Complete a Program Change form once they graduate from Mines if they plan to continue with Program coursework.
